We recommend limestone over round rock for gravel driveways because the angular edges of crushed limestone lock together and make a stable surface for vehicles to drive over. Choosing the right gravel depends on the type and slope of your driveway. Sloped driveways will benefit from dense grade gravel. For the portion of the driveway nearer to the house, #8 limestone or #57 limestone is optimal.
The type of gravel that’s best for your landscaping will depend on its intended purpose. Is it meant for decoration, or will it be walked on? For decorative gravel, larger stones like #4 Oversized or #57 gravel can provide a certain aesthetic. For gravel that will experience foot traffic, smaller stones are ideal.
Dense grade gravel that is packed down is best for use under pavers. You can pack down the gravel by renting a vibratory machine to ensure your pavers have a solid foundation and don’t shift or sink.
If you’re topping up an already existing driveway, you’ll need about 2-3 inches of gravel on the surface. For a brand new driveway, you’ll need a base coat of 2-4 inches of foundation gravel and then a top coat of 2-3 inches as a surface layer.
