The precision of the rock slinger truck
Moving aggregate material is one of the most time-consuming, messy, and labor-intensive parts of construction or landscaping. That’s where rock slinger trucks come in.
A rock slinger truck, also known as a stone slinger or a conveyor truck, is a fantastic tool for precision material placement jobs. Rock slingers transport and place aggregate exactly where you want it so you can skip the mess and the heavy lifting.
Using a high-speed conveyor belt system, the rock slinger can “shoot” material with extreme accuracy, instead of dumping it into a haphazard pile. This method saves money and time by cutting down on extra equipment costs, wasted material, and hours spent spreading material around.
What’s wrong with the dump-truck method?
Dump trucks have been helping builders move material for years. Relying on the power of gravity, a dump truck will simply drop a pile of gravel in a general area close to a building site. While this is helpful in many construction situations, it’s only step one of the process.
After material is dumped, it usually needs to be moved again, spread out, or both. This requires more equipment, more labor, and more time. In addition, dumping material the traditional way is not always possible due to the location of the site. For urban sites, unstable ground, or hard-to-access areas, rock slinger trucks can solve delivery and placement problems.
The elements of rock slinger trucks
While rock slinging may sound like a chaotic process, it is anything but that.
Along the bottom of the bed is a long conveyor belt. The belt moves and acts as a feeder to pull the material onto the swing arm.
The swing arm is a long, external conveyor arm attached to the rear of the truck. It can swing left or right and be raised or lowered. This allows the truck to park in one spot while the arm aims and shoots material into foundation corners or over fences. Swing arms can be controlled with a remote, allowing the operator to aim the material in certain directions.
At the very end of the swing arm is the throw conveyor. This conveyor belt spins at extremely high speeds so that material is accelerated toward its destination. The faster the speed, the further the material will travel. This speed can also be remotely controlled.
By combining the speed of the belt and the positioning of the swing arm, a highly accurate movement of material can take place. As the material is being propelled out, the swing arm can be moved back and forth. This allows for accurate filling and helps to eliminate manual spreading or raking later on.
Use a rock slinger truck for your next project
When heavy, clunky material like sand, gravel, or soil needs to be moved on time and within budget, you need a quick and accurate method for transporting and placement. A rock slinger could be your secret weapon.
Rock slingers are especially beneficial for tight spaces, hard-to-maneuver job sites, and residential construction operations. Narrow streets, alleyways, and other urban constraints don’t allow much room for dump trucks to be driven on and turned around in. With a rock slinger truck, limited access isn’t a problem. Aggregate material can be propelled precisely and efficiently into its intended location from feet or yards away.
A few common uses for rock slinger trucks include:
- Foundation Preparation: Shooting gravel directly around drain tiles and foundation walls without the risk of heavy machinery driving too close and collapsing the soil.
- Landscaping: Spreading topsoil or mulch evenly over large areas, eliminating hours of raking.
- Plumbing & Utility Trenches: Covering pipes with sand or fine stone from a distance, keeping the trench safe from cave-ins caused by heavy equipment near the edge.
- Steep Slopes: Moving material onto hills where wheelbarrows or dump trucks cannot safely operate.
