As America marks its 250th anniversary this July, the team at Bray Topsoil and Gravel is reflecting on the many freedoms that have allowed a small business like ours to grow, thrive, and serve our community.
Thanks to the entrepreneurial spirit that has flourished in America, small business owners make up a large portion of our economy and are the steady foundation of our nation’s commerce. In 2025, the U.S. Small Business Administration reported 36.2 million small businesses, which account for almost 46 percent of private sector employment. Additionally, there were 1.1 million new small business establishments opened last year, and small businesses created a “net increase of 1.2 million new jobs.”
The American Revolution and the publication of the Declaration of Independence were a turning point for the world in many different ways. The year 1776 saw the birth of a new country, and with that, the world accepted a new idea of what it meant to be free. The opportunity to think, innovate, and produce in America has given rise to some of the greatest technological, medical, and cultural achievements in human history.
The United States government was formed on the foundational principles that all men are created equal, and thanks to that equality enshrined in our nation’s Constitution, all men have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That freedom to pursue happiness has given millions of people the chance to strike out on their own and make something of themselves. The “American Dream” became possible for anyone who wanted to work hard.
This blank slate of freedom is still very much alive today.
Bray Topsoil and Gravel has thrived for over 80 years thanks to the ideals of America’s founders and those who continue to protect our freedoms today. What started as a small operation between two brothers has grown and evolved into multiple thriving companies serving homes and businesses across the Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati region. Only in America could a company like Bray see the success and expansion we’ve been blessed with over the years.
The freedom to work toward a goal and build on a dream is what inspired brothers Maurice “Pop” Bray and Wilson Bray in 1945 when they founded Bray Trucking Inc. With one flatbed truck they started hauling hay, concrete blocks, sand, gravel, and limestone to builders and homeowners around Campbell County, Kentucky. Their slogan was, “We haul anything.”
Business was booming, and Maurice and Wilson finished their first year with four single-axle trucks in operation. They quickly made a name for themselves and today, Bray Topsoil and Gravel employs over 60 people. We’ve built upon the vision of Maurice and Wilson Bray by working hard and serving our customers with excellence.
At Bray Topsoil and Gravel, we believe that freedom is what allows so many small businesses in the United States to be successful. We’re grateful to live and work in a country that sees small businesses as the fuel that they are, creating jobs, supporting supply chains, and contributing to the economic framework of this great nation.
To celebrate this 250th anniversary for the United States of America, we’ve dedicated a special Bray truck for the occasion.
We look forward to many more years of American prosperity and another year of meaningful work with our team at Bray Topsoil and Gravel.
Happy 250 years, America!
