What is the Purpose of Topsoil?
When gardening and landscaping, there are many techniques that can make or break your success. Whether you’re landscaping for a commercial property or just beautifying your backyard at home, it’s good to get the basics right.
One thing you’ll need, regardless of the project type, is topsoil. Topsoil may look like regular old dirt, but it’s an essential part of the planting process.
Let’s break down the purpose of topsoil—a landscaping must-have for successful growth and a proper foundation.
What Makes Good Topsoil?
Topsoil is an essential starting material for any yard or raised garden bed. It’s the layer of soil that holds all the nutrients that feed your lawn and plants. Topsoil is also the layer of ground where your grass and plants extend their roots, so good quality topsoil allows your lawn and plants to grow strong.
At Bray, we work with two different types of topsoil: shredded and non-shredded. While both can be used for landscaping and lawns, shredded topsoil is finer and non-shredded topsoil is grassy with roots and other organics.
Topsoil is the uppermost layer of your planting project, typically 2 to 8 inches deep. In contrast to earth that’s deeper, topsoil is rich with minerals and organic matter, giving the soil a dark brown or black color.
In addition to providing nutrients that help plants grow and thrive, there are many other benefits and purposes for topsoil. Good topsoil holds the right amount of water to keep roots hydrated, but drains enough to prevent drowning them. The loose, crumbly texture of topsoil allows roots to push through the earth, spread out, and establish a strong foundation. Topsoil is also home to bacteria, fungi, and earthworms that keep plants healthy.
Topsoil vs. Garden Soil and Potting Soil
When you’re at a plant nursery or ordering bulk topsoil from a commercial provider, be careful not to confuse it with garden soil or potting soil. Topsoil is best for large-scale projects like leveling lawns, filling holes, or creating a base layer for new planting beds.
Garden soil is often made from mixing topsoil with fertilizer or compost. Garden soil is best for planting beds to provide enrichment. Potting soil is light and fluffy. It’s specially designed for smaller containers and ensures adequate drainage so potted plants don’t experience root rot.
Common Uses for Topsoil in Landscaping and Gardening
There are lots of important purposes for topsoil. If you’re considering the following projects, make sure you include topsoil on your list of gardening materials.
- Lawn Leveling & Seeding: Filling in low spots in the yard before planting new grass seed.
- Building Raised Beds: Using topsoil as the bulk layer, often mixed with compost, to fill deep raised garden beds affordably.
- Improving Existing Soil: Mixing topsoil into old soil to improve its texture and nutrient profile.
- Grading: Sloping soil away from a house’s foundation to prevent water damage.
