How To Improve Yard Drainage With Gravel

Rain, rain, go away! If you’ve got a yard drainage problem, you’re probably uttering those words every time rain’s in the forecast.

The ground gets squishy, and maybe the moisture even sticks around enough for mosquitoes to flourish. Or worse, excess water can head straight for your home or office foundation, causing water to leak into the basement. That problem can carry a hefty repair bill.

Fortunately, gravel can mitigate pooling water in your yard before it becomes a problem. Read on to learn which will work best for your yard’s situation.

Redirect the flow

Sometimes, it’s a matter of diverting the flood to a different location. A two-inch layer of gravel on affected areas is often enough to keep the water flowing into the ground and away from your home.

Why?

Water moves through gravel faster than through soil. For extra absorption help, try adding sand and crushed rock under the gravel.

Install a french drain

If a layer of gravel isn’t going to cut the mustard, there is a more intensive solution. A french drain involves digging a trench, inserting a perforated pipe in the bottom of it, and then covering the pipe with gravel.

The gravel serves multiple purposes here: keeping debris out, quickly moving rainwater to the pipe, and holding the pipe in place.

Put gravel around raised and container beds

Raised beds and container beds can be a convenient way to garden and grow fruits and vegetables. However, sometimes they have issues with drainage, damaging the fragile plant roots.

There are a couple of ways to address this. One is to put a layer of gravel and wood at the bottom of container beds. The gravel pulls the moisture downward and prevents saturation. Similarly, another way to divert water is to put a layer of gravel around the outside of the raised bed’s base.
